For a while now, EasyLove has been following the DJs From Mars. Due to their unique style and incorporation of both top 40, mashup, and electro packed tightly into a single song, their new bangers never fail to get a crowd going nuts. We decided to hit them up and get an interview to find out what is really going on with these extraterrestrial, booty-makin DJs:
ELR™: How long have you guys been DJing together?
DJs FM: It’s been a long time since we met, but we are focused only on Djs From Mars project for the last 3 years.
ELR™: How did you guys meet?
DJs FM: We met at BlissCorporation studios, in Turin, Italy. We both were producers in the label’s studios, and we both made lots of stuff on our own, or with other producers, before working on the Djs From Mars project… it happened for real random reasons: a Finnish girl came in Turin, we loved the way she spoke Italian, and we recorded some vocals, just for fun… than we put her voice over an instrumental, it worked, and it was the first track as Djs From Mars (it was called “Non Dormo Piu’”, in 2004)
ELR™: How did you come up with your idea of having martian identities?
DJs FM: It’s because we wanted to give the idea of something different…and we both love astronomy, so we loved the idea of coming from another planet…
ELR™: Do your Martian heads get in the way of your DJing or have you gotten used to wearing them?
DJs FM: They are part of us! We guess it would be totally different without those heads, only once we swapped the happy face with the angry one, and we weren’t able to behave! it’s like Superman’s clothes, we could not even dj without them…
ELR™: How would you classify your sound?
DJs FM: This is something we never would like to do…we guess everything we do can goes under the label of “dance music” but we also made tracks you cannot definitely dance to…we are listed in many “electro house” sites or blogs, but some of our tracks don’t have “electro” sounds, and some others are not really “house”…
The good thing in making lots of remixes and mashups is that you can work on reggae, metal, hip hop, techno, trance, latin, classical music, and take what’s good in every style…maybe “bastard pop” is the definition we like the best
ELR™: Do you see producing anything of a different genre in the future?
DJs FM: we don’t know about the future, perhaps we’ll make movies, or we’ll become basketball players! so nothing against producing a different genre….as we said, we try to do something different in every track
ELR™: Your alien selection has shown your skills as music selectors, how has this furthered your careers as DJs or producers? Have you gained a lot of popularity from it?
DJs FM: It’s just part of the process… you listen to a lot of different stuff, you produce your own, you play tracks in the clubs….they are just different sides of the same job…it’s all about loving music, in different ways.
Something similar to loving a girl: you have dinner with her, you have sex, you go visiting museums, you watch movies together… different actions, same excitement
ELR™: What music do you listen to when you aren’t DJing?
DJs FM: Really everything! This could take 3 days to answer…..we are not really focused on one style or genre…. just on good music!
At the moment we are loving dubstep, but also listening to some old roots reggae tracks, and hip hop of course…
No rules about it, just tons of very different stuff!!
ELR™: What music do you typically DJ with? Do you mainly play your own edits of songs or do you play whatever tracks you are currently loving?
DJs FM: In our sets, we play only tracks made by us. Actually, when we love a new track, we immediately try to make a re-edit of that, so it’s a natural selection…but we try to play stuff that you can only hear at our gigs.
Nowadays, being a dj it’s way too easy: you have your laptop with the top40 hits, you push the button, everyone can do that…we think that you have to improve your producing skills to give the audience something new everytime!
ELR™: How do you guys choose what tracks to mash up? I noticed that there are a lot of requests on your facebook page, do you ever take those requests?
DJs FM: It’s really natural stuff….when we listen to a new tune, sometimes it’s like “hey this is soundin like …..!!”
Otherwise, when we really love a track, we try 1000 samples to find the best….and when you hear the best you immediately recognize that it’s working!
Sometimes we also mashed up stuff starting from funny names!! Blur Eyed Peas or Snap Dogg were made it for that reason, and luckily they also worked musically!!
And of course we pay attention to every suggestion on FB or by email… it’s great to see that people wants us to do something they like!
ELR™: When producing these mashups, do you both go at it together or does one of you create one part more than the other? For example, does one of you compose the track and then one of you masters the track?
DJs FM: We work on different stuff in the same time, in 2 studios, so we can do more and more! of course we listen to each other’s work at every coffee break (which is every hour….Italian coffee rocks!) and so we manage to have stuff we both like!
It’s funny because we are very different, in every way, from food, to clothes, to music preferences…so when something is good to both of us, then probably it’s really working!
ELR™: What program do you use for the creation of these “booties”? Do you have a favorite sample pack or plugin?
DJs FM: Cubase is our main platform…and of course, tons of plugs and fx packs, vst synths, sample libraries, all of that….we just cant get enough of that stuff, and we are always looking for news! we are definitely software junkies!
ELR™: Lastly, what has been your favorite gig so far? Where would you like to see yourself djing in the future?
DJs FM: So many gigs in the last year were amazing! we cannot list’em all, but Germany and Austria are really great for our sound! we also really enjoyed a small Australian tour at the beginning of 2011…also France, Sweden, Portugal, and our Italy as well….every gig is a different experience, and gives u something that u’ll remember…
In the future we would like to perform on the moon, but we cant find any agencies! If someone out there can be helpful, please let us know!!
