It’s safe to say that Dubstep has blown up across the country. News like the recent announcement that Justin Bieber is looking to start producing music with dubstep influences show how dubstep has seeped into the top 40 charts (don’t shoot the messenger). And let’s not forget how Britney Spears made thousands of dubstep fans question their allegiance to the genre when she released the dubstep infused Till The World Ends. So I figured it’s only right to welcome these new fans of the genre with some quality dubstep choons that have yet to be overplayed on the radio *knock on wood*.

Let’s start with the basics:

Datsik, is the alias of Troy K. Beetles, a dubstep DJ and producer from British Columbia, Canada, and a prominent figure in the increasingly popular dubstep community. He is one of the grand daddies of Dubstep and has been making heavy hitting wobble music that dub heads adore since the start of the genre in North America. He has had 7 number one releases on Beatport and has collaborated with artists such as The Crystal Method, Noisia, Wu-Tang Clan (Who he cites as one of his main inspirations), and Diplo.

If his resume isn’t impressive enough, let his music speak for itself. His release on Diplo’s Mad Decent Label is a refreshingly unique sound that I have yet to find in any other tracks. The track seems to be a combination between electro and dubstep, combining some of the best elements of both genres.

As for some older goodies, check out these Datsik throwbacks:

FirepowerDatsik
As far as catchy vocal sample goes, Datsik nailed it on this track. And you have his signature robotic sound surrounding the vocal clip. This is definitely the kind of music decepticons listen to while raging.

InvadersDatsik & Excision
This collaboration between him and the other dubstep guru, Excision, is my favorite production from Datsik. It’s a tasty metallic goodness perfectly designed for robot ears.

Excision & Downlink

These two dubstep producers also come from Canada (But really, how can such a chill country make such filthy, heavy hitting music?). They frequently work with Datsik, however, they recently have been teaming together to produce some downright dirty wobbles and basslines. Their most recent single, Crowd Control, takes acid basslines and adds a healthy helping of womp womp. This is some straight up sci-fi shit right here; get your laser beams out and get ready to rage into the future.

X-RatedDownlink & Exiscion
After listening to EDM for almost a decade now, I have developed a pretty good ability to control my desire to want to break out into some kind of ridiculous dance while listening to a fresh, new EDM track. However, this first time I heard this track, I must admit my self-control failed me. If James Brown were a robot this would be the kind of cyborg funk he’d be getting down to. This track comes from the album, X-Rated, which was released on the Mau5trap label earlier this fall.

Gemini Graduation 300x300 Dubstep For Days // +Brand New: Crowd Control Excision & Downlink

GraduationGemini

Don’t let the fluffy, soft beginning of the track fool you. This track is a dubstep masterpiece that exemplifies the caliber of music that can be made by the most talented producers within this genre. Gemini, is rightfully claiming their spot in the dubstep community with their productions that are as melodic as some progressive house melodies, but still holds on to the signature dubstep beat.

Black Widow (ft.Hollie G)Eddie K & Millions Like Us

The vocals in this track are pretty damn raw and unlike some other dubstep tracks that remove the vocals once the bass drops this song pushes the vocals throughout the tune. Snatch this up and watch how it will slowly climb up your most played on itunes. One of the producers of this track, Millions Like Us, are putting out alot of fire so follow them on soundcloud to keep up to date with their latest releases.

DM229.AliLove.DiminishingReturnsRemix1 300x300 Dubstep For Days // +Brand New: Crowd Control Excision & Downlink
Diminishing Returns (Alvin Risk Remix)Ali Love
This is a track that has been dropped by Skrillex and has been showed Beatport chart love by Steve Aoki. New on the EDM scene and incredibly talented Alvin Risk took Ali Love‘s lush vocals and arranged them to form this dubstep track. Datsik was once quoted in an interview that dubstep producers must learn how to “control the filth”, well Alvin just reinvented the filth with a whole range of new sounds that create the high-pitched drop in this track. There is definitely a hint of Sonny Moore in this tune and by no means is that a bad thing. Download and put that repeat button on lock.

Salt Air (Plastician Remix)CHEW LiPS
Over a year ago I was introduced to this track by another EasyLover, Nick Lucini. I remember how amazing I thought this track sounded over the EasyLove sound system while we were sound checking for a gig. A year later the haunting lyrics in this track still do not fail to give me chills during every listen. Plastician is a grime and dubstep producer who hails from England. Fun fact he used to be known as Plasticman till Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman sued him over name rights.

Now on to some fun tracks….

Hangover (Caspa Remix)Buraka Som Sistema
Before there was Skrillex, Datsik, Doctor P, or Borgore there was Caspa. Founder of the record label Storming Productions in 2004, he was putting out dubstep tunes while Skrillex was still screaming vocals over guitar riffs for From First To Last. This track is definitely a fun one to sing along with since the lyrics really have no meaning just a fun little mess of nonsense that will get stuck in your head.

Dirty Talk Play Me 300x300 Dubstep For Days // +Brand New: Crowd Control Excision & Downlink
P.O.T. (FS & Reid Speed Get It Legal Remix)Dirty Talk

Now if you’re a dubstep listener and have not yet heard of Reid Speed, you’re about to get familiar. This chick has been spinning since 1996 and was one of the first female djs in the EDM scene. She now runs two record labels from Santa Monica, California, Play Me & Play Me Too. She’s just signed the girl group Dirty Talk to her label and this track is Reid’s remix from their EP, Dirty Talk. Honestly, major props to all three girls for making a name for themselves in the mostly male dominated dubstep scene. Additionally, this track has to have some of the coolest samples relating to weed use. Who thought you could make having a cough attack after a gigantic hit sound appealing with a little wobble and bass?

Classic Dubstep Throwback:

Gold Guns Girls (BetaTraxx Remix)Metric
Now since this is the season of giving thanks, I would like to personally thank BetaTraxx for remixing one of my favorite Metric songs of all time. As Emily from Metric stated in an interview this song is about, “deep dissatisfaction in the material realm”. Well BetaTraxx takes all that jadedness and dips it in ridiculous basslines and high energy breaks then sprinkles some vocal bridges throughout the track just to give you a quick breather from the madness. Not a song to be played during your typical Thanksgiving family dinner.
